Sunderland take the spoils as Tyne-Wear derby returns after 10 year absence

Sunderland came from behind to take the win over Newcastle United at St James' Park.

There was late derby day dismay for Newcastle as Sunderland took the spoils in the first Tyne-Wear at St James' Park in a decade.

Newcastle United were out for revenge after a 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in December, but a late Brian Brobbey strike meant the Black Cats did the double over their rivals on Tyneside.

Ahead of the game, Eddie Howe told his side they must "play like their lives depend on it" and they started on the front foot looking to end a run of 10 consecutive league derbies without a win.

Anthony Gordon opened the scoring for the home side, capitalising on a mistake by Luke O'Nien in the Sunderland defence to put the Magpies ahead 10 minutes in.

Shortly before half-time, Sven Botman missed the chance to double the lead as his header hit Melke Elberg's post.

The Black Cats responded in the second half, as Chamsdine Talbi ushered a corner into the Newcastle net 10 minutes after the break to pull level.

Sunderland Captain Granit Xhaka almost gave the visitors the lead as his dipping effort looped off the head of Jacob Ramsey and floated narrowly over the bar.

Newcastle United substitute Malick Thiaw had the ball in the net, but the goal was scrubbe off after Jacob Murphy was ruled offside.

But Brian Brobbey struck late to give Sunderland the win, their eleventh consecutive league game against Newcastle without a defeat and extending a period of ten years without a win for Newcastle.

Sunderland were given a hostile reception on arrival into the city as fans lined the streets with flares and flags - with the windscreen of their team bus cracked after objects were thrown at it as it approached the stadium.
