Newcastle player ratings vs Sunderland after pathetic defeat that looks like the end of the road

A truly pathetic Newcastle United threw the game away as Sunderland beat them 2-1 in the first Tyne-Wear derby in ten years.

There is simply no defending Eddie Howe’s team. Gifted a lead through Anthony Gordon after a major Sunderland mistake, they still managed to capitulate – at home no less.

An absolute legend but there’s no coming back from this…

This Newcastle United team have given supporters so much over the years but it now looks finished.

Yes, they were missing key players but that is true of Sunderland too.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players in an absolute nadir of the Tyne-Wear derby…

Who was Newcastle United’s WORST player vs Sunderland – and why? 😡

Aaron Ramsdale – 5

Not strong enough for either goal. Looked nervy all game and rarely inspires any confidence.

Kieran Trippier – 4

Picked up where he left off against Barcelona – and that was bad enough.

Sven Botman – 5

Bullied by Brian Brobbey. Unlucky to hit the post, however. Forced off with concussion.

Dan Burn – 6

Not quite as bad as Botman but no longer convinces like he used to.

Lewis Hall – 7

Some brilliant crosses but poor defending on the second goal. Hall is one of few players who deserves credit this season, however.

Jacob Ramsey – 5

Anonymous. Ramsey had looked to be building up a head of steam in a Newcastle shirt but this was another setback.

Nick Woltemade – 6

Got the assist for the Gordon goal with some quick thinking. Played in the No.10 position for the first time in what felt like an age, Woltemade played well before fading.

Joelinton – 6

Put himself about as per usual and had some nice moments but didn’t do enough to actually impact the game.

Anthony Elanga – 4

Never convinces on the ball. Had a few openings that led to nothing, and should have done better in the opening exchanges with a header.

Anthony Gordon – 6

Gifted the opening for the goal but Gordon still had to take a touch, round his defender and finish and he did so in fine fashion.

Away from that, he pressed very well but could have done better with some late chances.

Harvey Barnes – 4

Did very little of note. The purple patch Barnes was on this season now feels like a distant memory.

Subs:

Malick Thiaw – 4

Jacob Murphy – 4

Joe Willock – 3

William Osula – 3

Tino Livramento – 3

Yoane Wissa – N/A
