Newcastle player ratings vs Sunderland with Burn one of three 4/10s in grim defeat

Newcastle United were defeated 2-1 by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby after surrendering the lead at St James' Park. Anthony Gordon put the hosts in front after weaving his way past Luke O'Nien before slotting the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the six-yard box with 10 minutes gone after Nick Woltmade capitalised on a dreadful pass from the Sunderland man.

The Magpies suffered a setback when Sven Botman departed with a head injury and was substituted by Malick Thiaw early in the second half. Sunderland drew level shortly afterwards, leaving the atmosphere tense around St James' Park. From the corner, Aaron Ramsdale palmed the ball away unconvincingly with Trai Hume flicking the ball back towards goal. Habib Diarra attempted to nudge it home with Dan Burn clearing before youngster Talbi hooked home to restore parity before the hour mark.

Le Fee was afforded time and space in the box with both Burn and Thiaw static. Brian Brobbey's initial attempt struck Ramsdale but three defenders surrounding him froze with Livramento also making it straightforward for the Dutchman to prod home in the 90th minute.
