Rupert Smith's father walks 22 miles to Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium

Rupert Smith, aged eight months, from Broughton, has been diagnosed with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) - an extremely rare and life-threatening genetic disorder.

He dad, Dave Smith, walked from Broughton to Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium yesterday (March 21) as part of the Rupert’s Rainbow appeal.

This appeal seeks to raise AHC awareness and gather £1.5million in donations so the family can be financially ready for emerging treatment and cure in the United States.

It followed Everton lighting up the stadium in rainbow colours for the match against Manchester United last month in a show of support for Rupert and his family.

Dave’s efforts on Saturday were then followed by him being in the crowd for Everton’s 3-0 win against Chelsea.

More than £6,000 has been raised from this walk alone – donations can be pledged at: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ruperts-rainbow-march.

Among those who joined Dave yesterday were his Rupert's uncle, Liam McHugh, his friend, James, and eight-year-old Harry Mackie, from Ruthin, who walked three miles between Hawarden and Garden City.

Harry, an Evertonian, has set out to walk 41 miles throughout March to support Rupert’s Rainbow.

Dave set off just before 6.45am, and arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium at about 2.30pm; nearly eight hours later.

He said: “Thank you very much for all the support we’ve received. We do really appreciate everything.

“It’s going to help give Rupert a future. He goes through more on a daily basis than what most adults do in a lifetime."

Siobhan Smith, Dave’s wife and Rupert’s mother, praised his “amazing” efforts on Saturday.

She added: “Thankfully the weather was kind to them, but they’re suffering today, with blistered feet and achy legs and hips.

“Thank you to everyone who donated. Please keep the donations coming in – it would be amazing if they could reach their target (£7,000).

“Thanks again for all your support.”
