Regis Le Bris' brilliant reaction to Sunderland's Newcastle win & what happens next

Brian Brobbey's 90th minute strike at St James' Park completed Sunderland's second half comeback and saw the Black Cats move above Newcastle in the Premier League table.

Sunderland are now unbeaten in 11 league derbies against their nearest and fiercest rivals, a record for the Wearsiders, who are just three points behind seventh placed Brentford with seven games to play.

It's been a remarkable first season back in the top flight for Sunderland, with two wins against Newcastle the icing on the cake for Le Bris' side.

Sunderland trailed to Newcastle on Sunday after gifting Anthony Gordon an early opener for the home side, but the Black Cats came roaring back in the second half. Chemsdine Talbi levelled just before the hour mark before Brobbey, the game's best player, struck in the last minute.

"It's a big achievement, winning two derbies in the same year, it means a lot for our fans and for the group," said delighted Le Bris.

"This game was tough, as expected, because we know that Newcastle have this ability to go strong, especially during the first half, to generate momentum. The crowd as well, they were intense.

"We conceded the goal, our mistake, which can happen, but the team reacted well, it was important to stay one nil down, to have the ability to realign the team during half-time. We showed what we wanted to show during the second half."

Sunderland's boss added: "This win means a lot for us, as a team, as a coach, as staff, for our fans as well.

"We've two games against Newcastle, and they play at a big level, they played in the Champions League last week, so it means a lot. It's another stage, and we want to get better."

Sunderland headed for St James' Park on the back of a Premier League defeat to Brighton and FA Cup humiliation at the hands of Port Vale.

Le Bris said: "We had a bad run recently, and really quickly the doubt can appear. I think we stayed composed, because we trust the way we are working.

"Consistency in this league is key, so winning at Elland Road was really important, winning at Newcastle means a lot as well.

"We are talking about consistency, not just one good game, we have to repeat, even if sometimes you struggle, because the league is so demanding."

He added: "Last year was an incredible season in the Championship, a long season like a marathon.

"It went well and the players got experience, and with the new players in the squad we kept that connection.

"It wasn't easy to keep this identity, but it's the case. In this season in the Premier League we had ups and downs, but we stayed connected with the identity and the way we wanted to play."

Sunderland are in the hunt for European qualification, and while Le Bris refuses to be drawn on aims between now and the end of the season, he says his players will not take their foot off the gas after their derby double.

He said: "It's a big achievement today, but it's not the end of the story.

"We have seven games in this league, and after that we have another season, so it's always a reset and go again, but I think it's a moment we enjoy today."
