Darren Bent issues verdict on Newcastle United star Harvey Barnes getting called up for England

Harvey Barnes is set to get another chance to impress for England and pundit Darren Bent is very pleased about that.

Barnes is eligible for Scotland but hasn’t decided to represent them despite the fact he has consistently been overlooked for them since making his only appearance for the Three Lions in 2020.

Was selling Isak in the manner they did where the wheels started to come off for PIF at Newcastle?

Still, the Newcastle United forward may yet get his chance to make a late dash for England’s World Cup squad.

Bent pleased ‘brilliant’ Barnes gets England chance

According to talkSPORT, Barnes is set to be called into the 35-man squad Thomas Tuchel has named for England’s upcoming games against Uruguay and Japan.

Barnes is set to replace Arsenal forward Eberechi Eze, who missed their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley with a lower leg injury.

An absolute legend but there’s no coming back from this…

Pundit Bent is happy the 28-year-old has got his reward. In Bent’s view, Barnes has been “brilliant” this season.

Speaking to the radio station, he said: “For Harvey Barnes, I’m happy for him because I think he should have had a [another] cap by now.

“He’s been brilliant this season.”

Those who have watched him on a regular basis might not fully agree. Though he’s certainly had his moments, it would perhaps be too much to suggest that Barnes has been brilliant on a consistent basis.

The former Leicester star has scored 14 goals across all competitions this season but hasn’t found the back of the net in the Premier League since early January.

A 24-man squad will take on Uruguay at Wembley next week before some of that group are rested and 11 of England’s biggest names come into the fold for the Japan game.

Barnes set to become sixth Newcastle United player in England squad

The last England squad before the international break is absolutely dripping with Newcastle United players.

Barnes becomes the sixth Toon star involved, alongside Aaron Ramsdale, Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon.

It is a testament to Eddie Howe’s coaching, although Newcastle fans could be forgiven for not being bowled over right now.

Indeed, almost all of them were largely anonymous during the club’s dreadful defeat to Sunderland heading into the international break.
