Liverpool are fifth in the Premier League table but have lost 10 times in the top flight this season.

Steve Nicol believes that Arne Slot does not deserve to be sacked from his post as Liverpool boss - even if Champions League qualification is not delivered.

The Reds’ 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion was the 10th Premier League defeat of the season in what has been an insipid Premier League title defence. Liverpool are fifth in the table but have a battle to secure their spot in next season’s Champions League with seven games remaining.

There are sections of supporters are calling for a change in the Anfield hot seat despite Slot guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory in his maiden campaign.

Speaking on ESPN, former Reds defender Nicol reckons that Slot deserves to take Liverpool into the start of the 2026-27 campaign. However, the Reds are expected to have another fairly busy summer and believes Slot could be axed if owners Fenway Sports Group and the club’s hierarchy do not trust the Dutchman to work with new players that arrive.

Nicol, who won four English titles and the European Cup with Liverpool, said: “I think he should keep his job, regardless of whether he gets in the Champions League or not, he should because of what he did last year,

“And then he gets the chance to change it now. People ask me how can it change next year? Professionally it does change, teams can be at that level and then drop down, certainly not as low as Liverpool have dropped without a real honest excuse.

“So, that’s why I think he should get another chance at the start of the season. That would be the reason why he would get the sack, because they don’t want to give him that amount of money.

“For me, it’s really simple. It really boils down to whoever’s making the final decision, that will be the question, because of what happened after we signed so many players last year. They have to sign players, there’s no doubt, so the question becomes for the man in charge, ‘do I trust Arne Slot with this money and these new players?'

“Right now, because he won the title last year... we tend to forget he took over a bit of a machine and all the questions were: ‘How is he going to take over from Klopp’. Unless you can turn around and convince me he was lucky, he deserves another shot with the money.”
