Doctors deciding today if Newcastle United star can go on international break

Over the past week, concerns have grown regarding Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali’s fitness. He left the pitch early against Barcelona, leaving many in Italy fearing his absence for the upcoming FIFA World Cup playoffs.

Sport Witness reported that the midfielder responded positively to Rino Gattuso’s call-up to the Azzurri. His injury was not major, and whilst scans revealed an issue it wasn’t thought to be serious.

The Newcastle United midfielder didn’t feature during the defeat to Sunderland on Sunday.

Inevitably, his lack of minutes sparked further fitness worries in Italy, as the country faces a crucial match this week against Northern Ireland. Now, a key fitness test will likely determine his availability.

Team doctors to have final say

Corriere dello Sport examined the fitness of several Italy players ahead of their training camp. While many believe Tonali is largely ‘okay,’ the staff haven’t made a final decision on his full involvement yet.

Azzurri team doctors will assess the situation today. Due to the injury he sustained against Barcelona, staff have placed the midfielder under ‘special observation,’ alongside Gianluca Scamacca.

The striker suffered an adductor injury at the weekend but has decided to push through the pain. Tonali’s situation appears more optimistic, and the FIGC have confirmed he’s on the list. Federico Chiesa has pulled out after team doctors deemed him unfit for the tie against Northern Ireland. Given that staff withdrew Chiesa immediately, the outlook for the Newcastle player seems more positive.

Tonali hope for Italy

Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali

Tonali remains hugely important to Italy. If he is anywhere near full fitness, he will play. Gattuso’s side simply cannot afford to lose him for such a monumental game in the country’s history. Even during the qualifiers, the former Brescia talent came up with many key performances.

The Azzurri would hope for more of the same in the next few days. Newcastle United and specially Eddie Howe will be keeping an eye on the situation with some worry.
