Monday morning never felt so miserable as a Newcastle United fan, as we witnessed another second-half collapse to see Sunderland win the Tyne-Wear derby 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each Mag involved in [yesterday’s derby day disaster](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2026/03/22/derby-disgrace-at-st-james-park-newcastle-1-2-sunderland/).

Ramsdale (4) – Made a few decent saves, specifically one from Talbi in the first half, but flapped horribly at the corner in the lead-up to the first goal. Far from the worst on the day, but a significant upgrade is needed in goal next season.

Trippier (4) – Completely ran out of steam in the second half as he offered nothing going forward. Set pieces were a let down as we failed to create anything from his deliveries.

Botman (5) – Was unlucky to hit the post in the first half and made a decent fist of playing at right centre back. Copped a heavy whack to the face and was forced off under concussion protocol. Missed him when he went off.

Burn (3) – Did not handle Brobbey well at all and will not enjoy watching this one back. Arguably his poorest display of the season in the game that would mean the most to him. Looked knackered by the end.

Hall (5) – Emerged with some credit due to some enterprising play going forward with two particularly great crosses nearly leading to goals. Carelessly gave the ball away a few times in dangerous areas and will need to tighten that up.

Ramsey (4) – Was energetic and available to receive the ball in the first half but his performance fell off a cliff in the second half  along with the rest of his teammates. Also looked fatigued by full time and will need the international break to recharge.

Joelinton (4) – Expected a lot more from big Joe on derby day but he failed to deliver when we needed him most. Another one who was out on his feet in the second half as we were completely overrun by the visitors.

Woltemade (6.5) – Was actually performing well and claimed the assist for the opening goal. Linked up play well and seemed to be growing into the role. Disappointingly subbed off after an hour with what is increasingly like a preplanned sub.

Elanga (4) – Headed over the bar early on and lashed one into the side netting shortly after but that was as good as it got. Another one who fell victim to the obvious preplanned sub on the hour mark. Need more from him.

Barnes (3) – Very lucky to get a call up to England off the back of a listless and ineffective display. No crosses and no shots tells a sorry tale.

Gordon (6) – Took his goal really well and led the press from the front which caused all sorts of problems but was guilty of profligacy in the second half as he wasted some good chances.

Thiaw (3) – Was dropped from the starting line up and did nothing to suggest it was an incorrect decision when he came on. Was stuck in the mud for the winning goal and did have a goal rightly ruled off for offside.

Murphy (4) – Forced the keeper into a good save and whipped in a decent cross but that was the extent of his impact.

Livramento (3) – Won’t enjoy watching the winning goal back as he allowed Brobbey two bites of the cherry in the six yard box. Showed his limitations in the attacking third with some poor crossing attempts.

Willock (3) – Attempted to dribble and ran straight out of play which encapsulated how his appearance off the bench went. Hasn’t grasped the opportunity in the absence of Bruno, Miley and Tonali.

Osula (NR) – Ran around but barely got a kick.

Wissa (NR) – Wasn’t on long, but offered nothing…again.
