Coventry City boss Frank Lampard refuses to get carried away with talk of winning the Championship title

Frank Lampard refuses to get carried away with any title talk despite Coventry City putting themselves right back on course to return to the Premier League in style as champions of the second tier.

The Sky Blues have recovered their position at the top of the table after losing a ten point lead and slipping to second place behind Middlesbrough for a week amid a mid-term wobble in results. But seven wins out of their last eight league games has reasserted their authority in the division, with just seven games of the season to go.

Restoring a healthy lead over second placed Boro, back up to a nine point gap, and with an eleven point cushion to automatic promotion rivals Ipswich and Millwall, something would have to go spectacularly wrong for City to mess things up now.

There has been a steely determination amongst the players amid their latest sequence of positive results, the only dent coming against Southampton. They have the look of champions about them, such is the incredible confidence coursing through the squad right now every time they step foot onto the pitch.

The fans know exactly what they’re going to get from them in every game; a renewed consistency of quality, work-rate and backing each other up. They have the momentum and look every bit a team capable of completing the job in style, by finishing with a flourish and taking the title early.

The team’s success has been built on togetherness – as has the club’s rise up from League Two – and that’s more evident than ever with the finish line in sight. The way Lampard made maximum use of his squad at Swansea spoke volumes for the trust he has in his wider squad, giving game time to the exceptional club man Jake Bidwell while handing more minutes to winger Jahnoah Markelo as he continues to bed in following his January move.

Luke Woolfenden had every right to be disappointed after Bobby Thomas was pitched straight back into the side after recovering from a calf strain but he didn’t sulk, he went on late to help see out the victory.

With City’s nearest rivals all dropping points earlier in the day, the 3-0 win felt like a real statement result as promotion edged tantalisingly closer.

The fans can smell it, and they want to go up winning the league. But asked if it’s too early to be saying he wants to win the title, three times Premier League winner Lampard said: “Yeah, it’s a headline isn’t it, so why would I do that? There are seven games and 21 points and we don’t know what everyone else is going to do.

“We haven’t got to this position by having those sort of goals or saying them out loud. But I’m not a big believer in that anyway. I’m a believer in taking care of our business to get to where we want to get to. And fortunately now we don’t have to look around too much, we can just go and do what we need to do to get us there, if we can get there.

“And that was the delight of today (against Swansea) because they dealt with the game. It was a very, very mature performance in all senses and, yeah, I enjoyed watching it. Obviously three goals in the first half helps but I enjoyed watching it, how we saw the game out and everything.”
