‘Unfortunate consequence’: Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on Man Utd being denied penalty after Amad incident

Dermot Gallagher has now reacted to Premier League referee Stuart Attwell denying Manchester United a penalty against Bournemouth after a challenge on Amad Diallo.

Manchester United fans were furious in the second half after a contentious refereeing decision allowed Bournemouth to find an all-important equaliser.

Amad Diallo was brought down in the box by Adrien Truffert’s challenge and Bournemouth launched an immediate counterattack against United.

United’s pleas for a penalty against Bournemouth were waved by Stuart Attwell and Ryan Christie netted past Senne Lammens off the back of the Cherries’ attack.

Dermot Gallagher thinks Stuart Attwell should have awarded Man Utd a penalty against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium

Stuart Attwell found himself in hot water with Manchester United supporters for his questionable decision not to award the Red Devils a spot-kick in the second half.

VAR checked the challenge on Amad Diallo during the Bournemouth counterattack and did not ask Premier League referee Attwell to review his initial call last Friday.

Attwell would be slammed later in the second half after he sent off Harry Maguire and awarded Bournemouth a penalty for a similar situation to Amad’s one.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher insisted that Attwell was “looking straight” at the incident involving Amad and still somehow denied it.

“I think they are both penalties; if you look at them, they are so similar, so on balance, give both,” he said.

“It is just an unfortunate consequence – the referee [Stuart Attwell] has got the most perfect position, he is looking straight at it and in fairness he waved it away straight away, the ball goes up the other end and the VAR is still looking at it when the ball goes in the net.”

Dermot Gallagher’s feelings on VAR’s lack of intervention around Stuart Attwell’s Bournemouth vs Man Utd call

Michael Carrick’s men walked away with a Premier League point in their final match before the start of the March break after the 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Gallagher explained that Attwell would have informed VAR why he had ruled out not giving Man Utd a penalty after Adrien Truffert’s poor tackle on winger Amad.

The 68-year-old former Premier League referee added that VAR would have backed up what Attwell had said after reviewing the footage themselves during the match.

“Stuart has obviously fed back to them that it is not enough of a shrug and is not a clear and obvious error, there is not enough in it and they have backed the referee,” he said.

United are third in the Premier League table and are one point clear of fourth-place Aston Villa ahead of their encounter with Leeds United on 13th April at Old Trafford.
