Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker spot same‘really important’ Man Utd silver lining going into March international break

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker felt the same way about the most important factor for Manchester United after Liverpool and Chelsea’s setbacks ahead of the March break.

The Red Devils were left frustrated ahead of last weekend’s Premier League fixtures after Manchester United’s encounter with Bournemouth on Friday evening.

Man Utd were reduced to 10 men against Bournemouth after the sending off of Harry Maguire, with VAR and poor calls dominating the headlines from the match.

Michael Carrick and his men walked away from the Vitality Stadium with only a Premier League point after United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on the night.

Alan Shearer highlights Man Utd’s draw vs Bournemouth and Gary Lineker makes a major Liverpool and Chelsea point

Manchester United remain in third place in the Premier League table, but the Red Devils’ result against Bournemouth allowed Aston Villa to close the distance.

Third-place Aston Villa moved only a point behind United after Unai Emery’s men defeated West Ham in a 2-0 Premier League result at Villa Park on Sunday.

Speaking after the Bournemouth draw, Alan Shearer insisted that United’s point at the Vitality Stadium could prove to be a major moment in the race for the top four.

“I think it could be a really important point for Manchester United, a tough place to go, Bournemouth are in pretty decent form,” he said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“And I think the point is a decent result and could be a good one for them come the end of the season.”

Gary Lineker then added: “Especially when you consider the fact that both Liverpool and Chelsea lost. They’re both struggling. I mean, Chelsea, I thought Everton were really good.”

Liverpool and Chelsea’s Premier League results keep Man Utd in a strong position in the Premier League top-four race

United are six points clear of fifth-place Liverpool and seven points ahead of sixth-place Chelsea ahead of their final seven Premier League matches in the 2025-26 season.

Defending champions Liverpool were stunned ahead of the March international break after former United striker Danny Welbeck had a major impact for Brighton.

Danny Welbeck’s brace ensured that Brighton sealed all three Premier League points at the Amex on Saturday, with Liverpool suffering a 2-1 defeat on the day.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were blown out of the water by Everton on Saturday after David Moyes’ men sealed a 3-0 Premier League win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
