Newcastle United defender undergoes surgery after Tyne-Wear defeat to Sunderland

Newcastle United defender needs surgery after Tyne-Wear derby.

Sven Botman has undergone surgery on a facial fracture following a collision with Sunderland star forward Brian Brobbey in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Newcastle United confirmed on Monday afternoon that the surgery was a success and he will now face a spell out but his season is not yet done, and he is expected to return in the final weeks of the campaign.

Regis Le Bris’ side came from behind to seal a famous league double over their bitter rivals this season, with Brobbey scoring a 90th-minute on Tyneside after Chemsdine Talbi had pulled his side level earlier in the second half.

The result compounded a miserable week for Newcastle, who also lost 7-2 to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. And the pain continued on Monday when it was confirmed that defender Botman has undergone the knife, he was subbed in the 55th minute of the Newcastle defeat.

A Newcastle United statement read: “Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has undergone successful surgery on a facial fracture. Following concussion protocol, the Dutchman was substituted after suffering the injury during the second half of Sunday's game against Sunderland at St. James' Park.

“Sven is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period and hopes to be available again during the closing weeks of the season. Everybody at the club wishes Sven a swift recovery.”
