Opinion: Thomas Tuchel just rubbed salt in Everton star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's wound

Everton star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was overlooked for the latest England squad, and Thomas Tuchel has made another questionable call.

There was great news last week at Everton as James Garner earned his first call-up to a Three Lions squad.

Surely everyone is Moyes in now? 🤔

David Moyes.

That was no less than he deserved, as Garner has been tremendous all season.

But sadly there was no call-up for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, despite having been so influential for Everton and being key in the club’s push for European football.

Many felt Dewsbury-Hall deserved a chance.

But seemingly, he still has plenty of work to do to be considered for a call-up – especially after what Tuchel has just done.

Another blow for Dewsbury-Hall as Harvey Barnes gets England call-up

Yesterday, it was announced that Harvey Barnes had been called into the England squad as a replacement for Eberechi Eze, who is injured.

It is a second call up for Barnes, who previously made a squad in October 2020 when he won his only England cap in a friendly against Wales.

Now, no one is saying that Barnes isn’t deserving of being in the squad.

Newcastle United have been erratic this season but Barnes has done very well, and is the club’s second top scorer this season with 14 goals in all competitions.

But Barnes getting the nod over Dewsbury-Hall seems strange, especially since he’s not a like-for-like replacement for Eze.

Eze has played most of his minutes in a central position this season, operating in advanced areas. Essentially, the same as Dewsbury-Hall at Everton.

Surely the Everton man was the more like-for-like replacement.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is one of the best signings Everton have made in years, isn’t he?!

Not only does he have great final third output, but he's got the work-rate to boot 🔥

England already have plenty of wingers in the picture, with Jarrod Bowen, Noni Madueke, Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka all called up, with Phil Foden and Cole Palmer also options to play wide.

The only attacking midfielders in the latest squad are Morgan Rogers, Foden and Palmer.

So it’s a bit of salt in the wound for Dewsbury-Hall, especially given how well he’s played for Everton with his 11 goal contributions in 24 Premier League games.
