Manchester United eye “outstanding” West Ham midfielder as replacement for outbound Casemiro

With the summer approaching, both clubs face pivotal decisions: West Ham may need to sell key players or rebuild, while Manchester United must strengthen their squad, most notably replacing Casemiro, who will depart Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.

Amid this, it appears the Red Devils have identified a potential target in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on Fernandes as they plan for life after Casemiro.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen executive Keith Wyness indicated that Fernandes could leave West Ham if the Hammers are relegated this season.

Casemiro is set to exit Old Trafford after deciding not to renew his contract, ending a four-year spell in which he became a fan favourite.

Wyness, who now runs a consultancy advising elite clubs, believes Fernandes “won’t be going anywhere” if West Ham retain their Premier League status.

Fernandes’ Future Tied to Survival

On the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness commented on the growing speculation linking the Portugal international to a move to Old Trafford:

“Look, he has been outstanding for West Ham. He’s done a great job, and he would be one that would normally be linked.

“This is all going to be tied to whether West Ham escape or not. If they escape and stay up, he won’t be going anywhere. I’m pretty sure they’ll keep him and help build a team around him. But I’m afraid if they go down, he’ll be one of the first ones to go, so he’s got great value.

“So that’s going to be all about the next few weeks for West Ham. They put themselves very much back in the mix. Those three clubs down there are definitely in there. If you want, Leeds are even close now, so it could be four. But still, I think that’s going to be the answer to that one is will West Ham go or not?”

Mateus Fernandes’ future appears closely linked to West Ham’s fight against relegation. Should the Hammers survive, he is expected to remain a key part of Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad.

However, if the club suffers the drop, Fernandes could become a prime target for Manchester United as they look to replace Casemiro and bolster their midfield for next season.
