Bruno Fernandes becomes‘permanent fixture’of BBC Team of the Week, but another Man Utd standout missed out

Troy Deeney insisted that Bruno Fernandes must be in his BBC Sport Team of the Week — but the same cannot be said for the Manchester United captain’s teammate Matheus Cunha.

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock for Manchester United against Bournemouth in the second half after he scored from a spot-kick effort at the Vitality Stadium.

The 31-year-old Man Utd captain’s dangerous corner-kick also paid off last Friday evening after Bournemouth’s James Hill put the ball in the back of his own net.

Despite Fernandes’ superb input in Man Utd’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, Matheus Cunha also stood out for his display for the Red Devils in the encounter.

Why BBC Sport pundit Troy Deeney picked Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes amid his Matheus Cunha snub

Bruno Fernandes would not have broken the deadlock for Manchester United from the spot-kick had it not been for Matheus Cunha’s impact in the build-up.

Cunha produced a clever touch in the final third against Alex Jimenez and the scrambling Bournemouth player pulled down the Man Utd star inside the box.

The 26-year-old Brazilian was lively in the attacking threat and his superb technique against Alex Jimenez drew the foul that led to the Red Devils’ penalty last Friday.

But Troy Deeney snubbed Cunha from his picks and the BBC Sport pundit picked Fernandes as his only United player for his Premier League Team of the Week.

“It feels like the Portuguese midfielder is becoming a permanent fixture in the team of the week,” he said on BBC Sport.

“You have to put him in again after another goal, and also forcing the James Hill own goal.

“How long can United remain average and keep him before he decides it is time to leave the club?”

Michael Carrick sent a powerful message to Man Utd players about their return to Premier League action

The Bournemouth match was the Red Devils’ final Premier League match in March and United won’t return to action until 13th April against Leeds United at home.

Michael Carrick insisted that he was looking beyond the controversies in the 2-2 Bournemouth draw and is now putting his focus on the next outing at Old Trafford.

“It is what it is,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“It’s not a problem. Boys are going away and it feels a lot because of the international break, but we’ll be ready for Leeds when it comes.”

Man Utd and Leeds United’s Premier League showdown is slated for 8pm UK time after the March international break.
