Steele reveals emotional moment as he prepares to work with England

But he says he has also put in a lot of hard work himself en route to his unexpected call-up.

The Seagulls goalkeeper is part of a 35-man group for two friendlies ahead of the World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel says he is on trial for a role supporting and training with the goalkeepers in North America this summer.

Steele, who has been with Albion since 2018, said: “I'm very thankful for what this football club has given me.

“But, at the same time, I've worked hard myself. I think I have to give myself a little bit of credit as well.

“I owe a lot to this football club, a lot to the chairman, a lot to the previous managers.

“I'll always thank them from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity they've given me.

“But you have to take the opportunities. I think sometimes you have to give yourself a little bit of credit as well.”

Albion players pushed Steele towards the North Stand amid celebrations of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.

The former under-21 international added: “I came into the meeting yesterday and my team-mates gave me a big round of applause.

“That means more to me than anything.

“I think that shows what you mean to people. Very emotional. That, to me, is more than anything I could ever achieve in football.

“I think being a proper good fella and a good person is way more important than anything else and I think that showed.”

The England squad reporting for duty today will include former Albion defender Ben White, who replaces the injured Jarell Quansah to end his international exile.

Steele knew he was in a provisional squad but revealed he was given confirmation of his call-up via text message on Friday morning.

He cancelled holiday booked for the coming days and is looking forward to the challenge of showing what he can do.

He said: “I'm focused on going there and being the best version of myself every day.”
