Mason Greenwood was floored during a heated confrontation just 13 minutes into Marseille's match with Lille on Sunday. The former Manchester United forward collected possession in his own half but was brought down by Calvin Verdonk.
The referee Benoit Bastien brandished a yellow card, but Greenwood reacted angrily to the challenge and immediately rose to confront Lille's left-back. However, only to be shoulder-barged to the turf by Verdonk's team-mate Hakon Haraldsson, who raced over to intervene.
That escalation triggered a mass melee involving players from both teams. Haraldsson and Greenwood each received bookings for their involvement in the initial altercation.
The 24-year-old remained on the pitch for only a few more minutes before being withdrawn through injury. Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri came on in his place.
Greenwood's replacement went on to break the deadlock for Marseille with a close-range strike just before the interval. However, second-half strikes from Thomas Meunier and late substitute Olivier Giroud ensured Lille left the Stade Velodrome with maximum points.
Despite losing to their Champions League qualification rivals, Marseille have had a strong campaign so far, sitting in third place in Ligue 1. Greenwood has been vital to their impressive form, notching 25 goals across all competitions and adding eight assists during that spell.

Though he has not featured for United in over four years, there remains curiosity about how he is faring and whether transfer suitors are taking notice of his performances. That is because United inserted a sell-on clause when he sealed a £26.6million switch to Marseille.
It entitles them to receive up to 50 per cent of the profits generated from a potential sale. Serie A outfit Juventus are understood to be keen on signing Greenwood this summer.
£60million is touted as the transfer fee needed to secure him. United could consequently pocket a maximum of £30million from such a deal.

Just under half of that would arrive as profit; however, Marseille are likely to push for more given the clauses surrounding his future. Former loan club Getafe will also be monitoring Greenwood, as it is understood the Spanish outfit negotiated around 20 per cent of United's potential windfall.
Marseille qualifying for the Champions League next season could have implications for Greenwood's future, with the additional revenue perhaps making him more inclined to remain. Now under the management of Habib Beye, following Roberto De Zerbi's exit, Marseille hold the final automatic Champions League qualification position, sitting one point clear of fourth-placed Lyon and now just two ahead of Lille.
