Michael Owen believes Leeds United’s teammates need to do more to help Dominic Calvert-Lewin out of his goals slump, having failed to score in six games.
While Calvert-Lewin - who has been called into this month’s England squad, ending a five-year exile - ought not shoulder all of the blame for Leeds being unable to score for a full month, the striker is experiencing a drop-off in goals.
Having netted seven goals in six games in December, he now has just one in his last 10 outings. Over the past month, he has skewed a gilt-edged one-on-one chance against Manchester City and missed a penalty against Crystal Palace.
Yet it remains true that the attacker has only managed to drum up an xG score of 1.15 over the past three matches, highlighting the dearth of quality chances he has been offered. This lowers to just 0.39 when the penalty against Palace is taken out.

Owen, who scored 150 Premier League goals and 40 England goals, has nevertheless told Calvert-Lewin to keep the faith in what he is doing, instead re-emphasising that Leeds need to be more intuitive in the final third.
“Stay confident and believe in your ability and what got you to be scoring earlier this season,” he advised Calvert-Lewin, while responding to Leeds Live.
“Leeds as a team can create more, they are in a position where their home form is so important to staying in the Premier League and they can stay up with the fixtures they have coming up. So Dominic just needs to stay focused and relaxed.”
Leeds’ 0-0 draw at Brentford on Saturday meant the Whites have gone throughout the whole of March without netting a Premier League goal, with the scoresheet blank for four games now.

They have still managed to pick up two points thanks to keeping consecutive clean sheets against Crystal Palace and Brentford, but Owen says this won’t be the case in each of the final seven games.
He has again urged Leeds to be more creative but without diverting from the philosophy that has seen them climb four points clear of the relegation zone with just two months of the season left to play.
“The Premier League isn’t easy, maybe the team is getting a little tense given they are in a good position,” he pondered when asked about the drop off in goals.
“But they must create more chances as if they don’t score, they can’t always rely on their defence to keep a clean sheet.
“They must stay confident and true to the way they have been playing earlier in the season where they were winning games and scoring goals. So this break can do them good and [they can] be ready to go again after the international break.”
