Joelinton facing Premier League ban after Sunderland incident

Joelinton received a stoppage-time booking shortly after Brian Brobbey’s goal, which put the Black Cats 2-1 ahead late on.

The Brazilian was shown a booking for ushering the Sunderland players away from the advertising hoardings in an attempt to get the game restarted quickly. Brobbey was also booked in the aftermath for removing his shirt in celebration.

It was Joelinton’s ninth booking of the Premier League season meaining another booking would see him banned for two matches for accumulating 10 yellow cards.

However, the Brazilian will avoid such a suspension should he pass the 32 game mark without picking up a further booking. Fortunately for the player, Newcastle’s next Premier League match at Crystal Palace on April 12 is their 32nd league game of the season.

As such, Joelinton would simply have to avoid a booking in that game in order to escape a suspension. Should he be booked at Selhurst Park, the 29-year-old would miss the following matches against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal.

No other players at risk of suspension

After Joelinton, Dan Burn has been booked the second most for Newcastle in the Premier League this season with seven so he cannot face a ban.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes the next most cautioned player with five.

Newcastle haven’t had any players suspended for yellow card this season but Jacob Ramsey and Burn have both been banned for one game after being sent off for two yellows. Anthony Gordon was handed a three-match ban at the start of the season after picking up a straight red card against Liverpool.

Joelinton was also handed a Champions League suspension after being booked against Barcelona but he won’t serve it as Newcastle exited the competition with a 7-2 defeat at Camp Nou last week.

The Magpies currently sit 12th in the Premier League table with seven games left to play.
