Bruno Guimaraes Newcastle United injury recovery setback after Brazil confirm he will miss two…

Newcastle United injuries: Bruno Guimaraes has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from a two-month hamstring injury.

Guimaraes would have missed the match regardless due to a hamstring injury suffered during Newcastle’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in February.

The Brazilian returned from rehabilitation in his home country last week as he enters the final weeks of his recovery process.

It is hoped Guimaraes will be back in contention for Newcastle’s return to Premier League action at Crystal Palace after the international break on April 12 (2pm kick-off).

But first, he will have to recover from his illness setback.

Bruno Guimaraes issues social media statement revealing illness

Guimaraes was set to attend the match at St James’ Park, having written a column in the matchday programme suggesting as such, only to be forced to isolate for the match after contracting mumps.

The Newcastle skipper posted on Instagram: “The only reason I’m not at the stadium in Newcastle is that after our flight back from Barcelona, I noticed my face was swollen and thought I was having an allergic reaction.

“But the next day when I woke up, I realised it was much more than that. I sent a photo to the doctor and he came to examine me. It was confirmed that I have mumps, and I need to remain in isolation for five days and stay away from physical activities for a bit longer.

“My focus now is to recover and be 100% as soon as possible.”

Guimaraes has now served his period of isolation and can now get back to focusing on his injury recovery during the international break.

Bruno Guimaraes misses two more games for Brazil

The 28-year-old would have gone away with Brazil if fit, but the latest squad announcement officially confirmed his absence for the upcoming friendly matches against France on March 26 and Croatia on April 1. Guimaraes has been working with Brazil’s national team medical staff while over in his home country but will now miss two more games before he returns to action for Newcastle.

Guimaraes will be battling to get back to full fitness quickly for Newcastle as he looks to help them salvage an otherwise disappointing season with seven games to go. Despite his injury, Guimaraes remains United’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with nine goals to his name.
