Liverpool and Manchester United begin tentative move for Real Madrid player ‘in recent weeks’

Antonio Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger’s Real Madrid contract expires in the summer. Liverpool and Manchester United are now sensing the opportunity to bring him back to England.

The German joined Los Blancos after his Chelsea contract had expired in 2022. Since then, he has won the Champions League once and also won La Liga in the same season.

Now 33, the centre-back’s situation is attracting attention once again, with Real Madrid yet to offer a renewal. Juventus had tried to sign him after his spell at Stamford Bridge ended. They are back in the fray for the defender and are, allegedly, competing with Liverpool and Manchester United.

Today’sTuttoSport looks at Rudiger’s future in detail.

Rudiger seen as a big coup

The Turin newspaper believe the ex-AS Roma player will be a major coup for Juventus, who have Luciano Spalletti as manager. The Italian managed Rudiger during their time together at the Giallorossi and this can prove important in a transfer.

Competition from Manchester United and Liverpool ‘in recent weeks’ can cripple Juve’s plans. Both English clubs have bigger financial strength than the Bianconeri, who are trying to race ahead by holding talks with Rudiger’s entourage.

The Red Devils, specifically, can have a major say in the deal. This is because Harry Maguire’s potential renewal can dictate where Rudiger ends up in the summer.

The newspaper believe his new deal is close to fruition at Manchester United, who will have a key meeting with his agents during the international break. A renewal is likely to go through, with only the length of the contract yet to be figured out.

Juventus are keeping a close eye on this development, as it will help them get closer to signing Rudiger.

Deal may not make sense for Liverpool or Manchester United

If Maguire does renew, the Old Trafford side might not need another experienced defender. They have younger centre-backs in Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro, with Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw more than capable of playing at centre-back.

Matthijs de Ligt is injured but he should be back at some point in the next few months.

As for Liverpool, Virgil Van Dijk is very much around. Ibrahima Konate coulddepart in the summer but to replace him, the Reds should ideally look for a younger profile. Besides, it is rare for the Merseyside club to sign players who are over 30.

That is why Juve might really have a chance at signing Rudiger this summer.
