Media sources in Brazil have been ramping up the narrative surrounding Bruno Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle United.
Fresh reports from Brazil have claimed Bruno Guimaraes has put new contract talks at Newcastle United on hold ahead of the summer transfer window and 2026 World Cup.
Guimaraes is currently out injured but is understood to be closing in on a return after the international break.
The Newcastle captain has been a key player at St James’ Park since his arrival from Lyon in 2022. The Brazil international is closing in on 200 appearances for the club and remains the side’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with nine goals despite missing over a month due to injury.
Since Guimaraes has returned from Brazil to step up his recovery on Tyneside, stories from his home country have started to surface surrounding his future. Guimaraes’ current contract at Newcastle, signed back in 2023, runs until 2028.
Last week, a bombshell report from Reuters claimed Manchester United were in advanced talks to sign Guimaraes for £69million. The report, written by Brazilian journalist Fernando Kallas, credited its source as one ’close to the negotiations’.
Kallas previously confirmed Guimaraes’ transfer to Newcastle in 2022 and conducted an exclusive interview with the player shortly after his arrival in England. The report also claims that Real Madrid are monitoring Guimaraes’ situation, having previously spoken with the player in the summer of 2022.

Eddie Howe responds to Bruno Guimaraes transfer claims
But those reports were rubbished by Newcastle and head coach Eddie Howe, who said: “I don't even know how to respond to that, I don't even think I should because it's a waste of my energy.
“Bruno's our captain, he's fully committed, he's injured at the moment, his only focus is coming back to fitness.
“For me it's a nonsense story. Is it a problem for us [to have big players linked with exits]? I don't necessarily think it's a problem for us, but it's unwanted news, I suppose is the best way to put it.
“You don't want your players distracted. I don't know how much they'll absorb that, but for me, it's not the time to think about that.
“In the summer you can sort of understand those stories a little bit more, because the transfer window's open. But to say our captain's in discussions with another club, I think is totally disrespectful to Bruno, more than anybody else. He's totally committed here.”
Bruno Guimaraes delays contract talks
Fresh claims from ESPN Brasil state that Guimaraes will not enter talks regarding a new deal at Newcastle before the end of the season or the World Cup.
The 28-year-old midfielder is set to go away with Brazil for the upcoming tournament, which could see his value increase further should he impress.
There is a recognition from the player’s side that his next contract will be the biggest of his career, whether at Newcastle or elsewhere. So Guimaraes and his party will bide their time to strengthen their position come the summer rather than commit to a new deal at Newcastle right now.
