'Really poor': Wayne Rooney hands West Ham lifeline in relegation battle

Premier League legend Wayne Rooney has just given West Ham some good news in the relegation battle.

While most people assume that either West Ham or Tottenham will be relegated, Rooney has refused to rule out Leeds.

Daniel Farke’s side drew at home to Brentford last weekend, but Rooney took issue with their performance.

How much is a trophy worth? Would you take relegation if it meant winning the FA Cup? 🏆

Wayne Rooney says West Ham can catch Leeds in relegation battle

After West Ham and Tottenham both lost at the weekend, Rooney was asked whether it is now a two-team relegation battle.

The former Manchester United striker emphatically dismissed that suggestion after watching Leeds’ game on Saturday.

“No, there can still be twists with the other teams,” he said. “Leeds are in there as well. I watched Leeds yesterday, and I thought they were really poor.”

Rooney then explained that Leeds did not even look like scoring at Elland Road, and that the supporters were also a surprising issue.

“Yeah, but they didn’t even look like they wanted to score,” he added. “There were no crosses with quality coming in the box, and the Leeds fans looked nervous.

“I said on Match of the Day, I thought the Leeds fans were poor, and normally Leeds at home, the fans are brilliant, and you get behind them, and you push the team, but they looked a little bit nervous yesterday, and it’s almost like they didn’t want to lose the game.

“So yeah, this is what happens when you’re down there, you’re fighting for relegation. All these emotions go through your head when you’re playing.”

Leeds are currently four points clear of West Ham, but they have not won a league game since the start of February.

If their players and fans continue to look “nervous”, as Rooney highlighted, the Hammers could absolutely hunt them down.

This could create an incredible final day spectacle as the two teams face each other at the London Stadium.
