Kalvin Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan from Manchester City in the hope of getting his career back on track, but things quickly took a turn for the worse during last month’s Steel City derby.

The former Leeds midfielder had only just begun to settle after completing a deadline-day move, with City even covering a large portion of his wages to help get the deal done.

Chris Wilder was understandably pleased to bring him in, given Phillips’ promotion experience and his pedigree as an England international who has featured in a major final, exactly the kind of presence the Blades were looking for. But that early optimism didn’t last long in the heated clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

Shortly after half-time, Phillips lunged into a reckless challenge and was shown a straight red card. He hasn’t featured since, and is only expected to play after the international break.

Kalvin Phillips makes huge transfer decision ahead of the summer

Phillips is aware that he has no future at Manchester City and will probably have to rekindle his career at a lower level.

According to Sportsboom, the former Leeds midfielder has informed Manchester City that he wants to avoid returning to the club in the summer.

Since he has no future at the Etihad, he would want to sort out a termination of his contract before pre-season training begins in the summer.

The midfielder still has two years left on his contract, and he is keen to work out an agreement that would allow him to leave as a free agent.

Phillips is prepared to forego a part of the £15m that Manchester City still owe him in wages to secure his exit from the club before next summer.

Manchester City have been made aware of Phillips’ intentions, and the club will soon decide on what to do in the coming months.

His decision has also put Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder on red alert, as he would be open to signing him on a permanent deal.

A lot needs to happen for him to stay at Bramall Lane

Phillips’ red card and his latest injury setback have not helped him to make a case for Sheffield United to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal.

However, the Sheffield United boss wants to add more promotion-winning experience to his squad next season, and Phillips fits that profile.

He needs to regain full fitness and return to the team after the international break to get more chances to impress Wilder until the end of the season.

If Phillips impresses and is ready to accept a reasonable wage offer, there is every chance Wilder would want him back at Bramall Lane next season.
