Report: Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid star who has already shone in the Premier League

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a move for Antonio Rudiger this summer, with the experienced defender emerging as a possible free-transfer option for Arne Slot.

The Reds are expected to look closely at the centre-back market ahead of next season, especially as Ibrahima Konate continues to be linked to Real Madrid.

While Virgil van Dijk remains the key figure at the heart of the defence, there is a growing sense that Liverpool need to plan both for the short term and the long term in that area of the pitch.

Just how bad do you want Arne Slot gone? 😬

That is where Rudiger comes into the picture, not as a signing for five years down the line, but exactly the kind of smart short-term addition Liverpool need. There is also the added bonus that prising a player away from Madrid for nothing would give the Reds a chance to get one back on the Spanish giants.

Liverpool linked with Antonio Rudiger as free transfer chance emerges

A report from Tuttosport has named Liverpool and Manchester United among the clubs interested in signing Rudiger when his contract expires. Juventus are said to be the side most heavily linked at this stage, largely because of his previous connection with Luciano Spalletti from their time together at Roma.

Even so, Liverpool’s interest makes obvious sense.

Rudiger has already shown he can handle the demands of the Premier League from his time at Chelsea, and that matters. Liverpool would not be gambling on whether he could adapt to English football or cope with the pace and physicality of the division.

And there’s every chance he is tempted with an Anfield switch. Rudiger ranks Van Dijk as one of the best in the world, and the partnership they could form is an exciting prospect.

On top of that, he brings elite-level experience in the Champions League, having won Europe’s biggest prize and played in some of the biggest games in world football.

For a Liverpool side that still wants to compete on every front, that sort of pedigree has real value.

Just as importantly, Rudiger could be the ideal stop-gap option while the next generation develops. Liverpool added young defenders Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet as part of their longer-term thinking, and a proven senior figure could help bridge that gap.

The year is 2030, how much is Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet worth!? 💰

For Liverpool, bringing in Rudiger on a free would look like a low-risk, high-value deal that strengthens the squad now while buying time for the future.
