Aston Villa target Pedro Gonçalves
Aston Villa target Pedro Gonçalves
Aston Villa’s long-standing interest in Pedro Gonçalves is back in the conversation again, with fresh claims from Portugal suggesting the Premier League club remain attentive to the Sporting CP attacker.
That, however, comes with a familiar feeling around it.
For years, Aston Villa have been linked with the 27-year-old. Despite that, there has never been a serious move close to Sporting’s demands. The latest update from Portuguese newspaper A Bola keeps that pattern intact, even if it tries to reframe the situation.
Form returns as market watches again
Pedro Gonçalves is finishing the season in strong form after earlier injury problems.
The Sporting player has scored 14 goals and provided seven assists this season. Those numbers come from 29 appearances and just over 2,000 minutes. Importantly, three of those goals arrived in his last two matches, underlining his late-season surge.
A Bola explain that he is now “in the best moment of his season”. They also stress that both Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen (again) are “very attentive” to his situation heading into the summer.
The timing is not accidental. With the World Cup approaching, Gonçalves is expected to be part of Portugal’s plans. That increases visibility and naturally draws interest again.
Still, the idea of interest is nothing new.
Contract situation makes deal complicated
Pedro Gonçalves signed a new contract with Sporting in October 2025. That deal runs until 2030 and keeps his release clause at €80m (£68.4m). On paper, that figure sets the price. In reality, things are more nuanced.
At 28 this summer, Gonçalves is no longer in his development phase. Sporting are unlikely to receive offers anywhere near the clause. Previous interest from Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen never reached that level either.
Back in 2023, Leverkusen saw a €30m (£25.7m) bid rejected. Aston Villa have historically been linked with offers in a similar range. Nothing close to €80m has ever materialised.
That context matters because if a move were to happen, it would almost certainly require a significant discount.
What happens next for Aston Villa
Pedro Gonçalves’ situation sits in a familiar place. Aston Villa like the player. They have liked him for years. However, their interest has never translated into a concrete push at Sporting’s valuation.

Now, with the player approaching 28 and entering the peak years of his career, the dynamics shift slightly. Sporting may still demand a high fee, but market reality points elsewhere.
Sporting will be well aware of the situation and conscious they won’t get anywhere near the €80m clause. There, a big discount is certain. Given all that Gonçalves has given to the club, he’ll expect cooperation if he gets a good opportunity in the summer.
Not only would a Premier League move see him on a much bigger stage, it would also change his career from a financial aspect.
For Aston Villa, the question is whether this is another cycle of monitoring or the moment they finally act. So far, history suggests the former.
