Thomas Tuchel's 'England weapon?' Why Man Utd ace's 'outstanding qualities' make him undroppable – opinion

England manager Thomas Tuchel has not overlooked the role that Michael Carrick has “especially” played in Harry Maguire’s importance at Manchester United this season.

Harry Maguire has often been praised for his impact at international level with England after being a key pick for former Three Lions boss Sir Gareth Southgate.

However, the 33-year-old former Manchester United captain has not featured once under Thomas Tuchel since the England manager succeeded Sir Gareth Southgate.

However, Maguire has climbed back into the England fold for the March international break after being called up by Tuchel for the 35-man Three Lions squad.

Thomas Tuchel has his eye on Harry Maguire’s impact from set-pieces and knows the impact that Michael Carrick has had

Harry Maguire, who is out of contract with Manchester United in the summer, has the chance to ‘audition’ for the England squad for the World Cup in North America.

Thomas Tuchel announced his England side for the March break last Friday and the Three Lions will face Uruguay and Japan at Wembley in international friendlies.

Harry Maguire had only made four Premier League starts under Ruben Amorim earlier this season, but he has been essential to Michael Carrick’s interim reign.

The England star has started all 10 of Man Utd’s Premier League matches under interim boss Carrick and Tuchel has been impressed by his quality at set-pieces.

“Harry simply deserves it,” Tuchel told The Football Association’s official website.

“He has, especially since Michael Carrick took over, had very, very good performances and fantastic results and is a key figure in the Man United squad who is now in third place and on a very good run of form.

“He’s a big reason for that, so he deserves to be with us. It’s interesting also for me to get to know him in person and to see him in training and see him within the group.

“He has outstanding qualities on set-pieces, so I’m happy that he found his way back to us.”

Harry Maguire’s aerial threat for Man Utd is now integral for Thomas Tuchel’s England plans for the 2026 World Cup

Carrick’s United coaching staff has included Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate and the pair have played a key role in working with the Red Devils’ defence.

Former Man Utd defender Jonny Evans has earned notable praise for his impact on the Red Devils’ set-pieces, with Carrick’s men looking dangerous from corner-kicks.

United have fully tapped into Bruno Fernandes’ mesmerising passing range and have ‘unlocked’ the heading power of both Casemiro and Maguire as key aerial threats.

Not only does Maguire have multiple tournament experiences under his belt with England, but the United star is also another key threat for Tuchel’s side now.

As Tuchel’s men aim to progress further in the knockout rounds of this summer’s World Cup, Maguire’s role from set-pieces could become the major difference-maker.
