Newcastle United injuries: Bruno Guimaraes is closing in on a return to action.

Guimaraes would have sat out the match anyway having suffered a hamstring injury that has kept him out for the last five weeks.

The midfielder returned from rehabilitation in his home country last week as he enters the final weeks of his recovery.

Eddie Howe hopes to have Guimaraes back involved for Newcastle’s next Premier League match at Crystal Palace on April 12.

But he will first look to get back to full fitness following illness.

Guimaraes was set to attend the match at St James’ Park, having written a column in the matchday programme suggesting as such, only to be forced to isolate for the match after contracting mumps.

The Newcastle skipper posted on Instagram: “The only reason I’m not at the stadium in Newcastle is that after our flight back from Barcelona, I noticed my face was swollen and thought I was having an allergic reaction.

“But the next day when I woke up, I realised it was much more than that. I sent a photo to the doctor and he came to examine me. It was confirmed that I have mumps, and I need to remain in isolation for five days and stay away from physical activities for a bit longer.

“My focus now is to recover and be 100% as soon as possible.”

Guimaraes has now served his period of isolation and can now focus on his recovery.
