Robert Earnshaw recommends Roberto De Zerbi for Man Utd job despite Marseille sacking

Robert Earnshaw has offered his preference for former Brighton and Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi to get the Manchester United job, despite Michael Carrick’s work to date as interim head coach.

Manchester United are in contention to qualify for the Champions League thanks to an impressive improvement in results under Michael Carrick.

Carrick became interim head coach in January and now has United sitting third in the Premier League ahead of the March international break.

There have been multiple managers linked with the hot seat at Old Trafford, while Carrick continues to make a case as to why he may be deserving of the job beyond this season

What position would Man Utd be in NOW if Ruben Amorim was still head coach?

Robert Earnshaw thinks Roberto De Zerbi is the right man for Man Utd

Former Wales striker Earnshaw has a valid reason to have an interest in who becomes Manchester United’s coach and whether Michael Carrick remains in the hot seat, since his son Silva Mexes plays for the academy.

Earnshaw never had the privilege of playing for United, but he did play for multiple Premier League clubs throughout his career.

As a special guest on Sky Sports News, Earnshaw was asked about Carrick and who he thinks should be a serious contender for the biggest job in football.

He has chosen Roberto De Zerbi, who is currently out of work after being sacked by Marseille earlier this year.

Earnshaw said: “I’m a big fan of Roberto De Zerbi’s football. You need somebody with a big personality and also somebody who can make the big decisions.

“I think he can do that. I think he is a person that will bring attractive football and, from what I hear, he’s such an excellent coach that you want to make it easy for the players to play. What he did at Brighton was he took them to about five different levels.

“I think he’s got the potential. The other one I would look at is Luis Enrique.

Of course, I would look at Michael Carrick.”

Earnshaw focuses on De Zerbi’s highlights at Brighton rather than his shortcomings at Marseille.

It will be interesting to see if Ineos are as forgiving, although De Zerbi’s name has been mentioned as a contender.

Tottenham keen on Roberto De Zerbi

There will be changes at other Premier League clubs this summer, including Tottenham.

Tottenham are on the hunt for a new permanent manager and De Zerbi’s name is believed to be at the top of their wish list for a summer appointment.

The Telegraph claims De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino are the frontrunners.

If this is the case, Earnshaw’s recommendation may end up in London this summer. That won’t be a problem for many United fans.
