Leeds United have confirmed that the preparatory works for Elland Road’s redevelopment will mean the moving and repainting of a mural.
The Whites’ plans for a new West Stand were given planning permission in January and as part of the proposals a mural commissioned and painted in 2022 will have to be moved and repainted. The mural, positioned at the north east corner of the ground, celebrates the club’s 1972 FA Cup triumph and features legendary manager Don Revie, trainer and coach Les Cocker and a host of now-iconic players. It was painted in 2022 to mark 50 years since the cup success, with Leeds artist Nicolas Dixon commissioned by Leeds United Supporters Trust to hand paint an abstract design using original portraits designed by fellow artist Paul Trevillion.
The wall that the mural was painted on is to become the club’s new security hub, with the current hub being knocked down. The need for outward kiosk windows means the mural will be moved and repainted by Dixon, who has been recommissioned.
A club statement said: “Leeds United have now recommissioned Dixon to repaint the mural entirely, to ensure it retains the pride and prominence it deserves. Work on the new security hub will begin from Wednesday March 25. The club would like to thank the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust for their cooperation and support.”
