Kieran Maguire shares the financial situation awaiting Nottingham Forest if they're relegated

Nottingham Forest boosted their chances of remaining in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Goals from Igor Jesus, Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi saw Forest go three points clear of West Ham in 18th after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Forest still have work to do and with the Hammers facing bottom club Wolves on home soil next time out, the Reds know their joy could be short-lived.

However, Forest are now playing with confidence, and after the victory, a football finance expert has revealed the state of play regarding the financial implications of remaining a Premier League club.

Kieran Maguire shares financial implication of being relegated

Maguire has been the go-to football finance expert in the United Kingdom for a number of years, and he’s now appeared on the Forest Focus podcast.

It’s believed that Forest will stand to rake in a hefty sum of cash following their campaign playing Europa League football, but remaining in the Premier League is where the big money is at.

Forest would have parachute payments to fall back on should they lose their Premier League status, but that will pale into insignificance compared to the top-flight riches.

MORE FOREST STORIES

Maguire said: “Well, the biggest hit is always in terms of the broadcast deal. Last season, 23/24, we’re still waiting. Forest accounts for 24/25.

“Forest will have made around about 140 million pounds in TV and broadcasting for finishing, it was in seventh.

“And that will drop to probably about 45 to 48 million in the championship. And that’s with parachute payments. So you’re looking at 90 million pounds there.

“If you take a look at the commercial side of the club, they’ve been very successful in terms of developing relationships with commercial partners, sponsors and so on. That is on the back of the fact that you’re hosting Liverpool, Manchester United, City, Arsenal and so on. It’s not because Brighton and Palace and Bournemouth are coming to town.

“That will disappear next season. So the commercial income, which was 45 million pounds in 23, 24, will take a significant hit. If you go back to when Forest were last in the championship, we were in single millions.

“So there are big hits. And as far as ticket sales are concerned, Forest fans are Forest fans first and foremost.

“So season tickets will sell out and so on.

“But I think it becomes that much more difficult to negotiate deals with the Prawn Sandwich Brigade in terms of maximising prices that you can charge for a box and so on if you’ve got Hull or Swansea on a Tuesday night. And that’s just economics.

“So I anticipate this season, with the inclusion of Europe, I would expect Forest’s total revenues to be somewhere in the region of 230, 240 million pounds.

“You drop out of the Premier League, and that’s going to go well under 100 million. So it’s a big change. It’s not occurred yet, and there’s no reason why it should occur.”

Evangelos Marinakis will be desperately hoping that Forest don’t get relegated this season, as it would undo all of his hard work to get the club to this point.

If the Reds do remain in the top-flight, Marinakis has to make sure there is far less chaos next season, and he might be wise to keep Vitor Pereira in position as the head coach.

The Portuguese incumbent has overseen a mini revival in recent weeks, and with money to spend, it seems Forest wouldn’t want any more upheaval, and a quiet summer would be most welcome.
