Man United have been linked with two Newcastle midfielders ahead of the summer transfer window.
Assuming that United do secure Champions League football, their bargaining power in the transfer market will be a lot better, because they can offer the draw of Europe’s top competition.
Newcastle United were in the Champions League this season, but they are currently 12th in the Premier League table, and look like they could miss out. Man United could capitalise by signing one of their players in the summer.
Romano says Man United have met with Guimaraes
Guimaraes would be a replacement for Casemiro, who is due to leave in the summer because his contract is set to expire. Transfer Journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that United have already met with the midfielder. He said on his YouTube channel: “What I can confirm is that, yes, a meeting did take place in recent weeks.
“It wasn’t held yesterday, today or tomorrow, but rather a few weeks ago between Guimaraes’ representatives and Manchester United. The information from Brazil is accurate: a meeting was held, and United maintain a good relationship with the agency.
“From there, meetings can lead to agreements on personal terms, and eventually to registering the player in the summer, but there is still a long way to go. As I mentioned in a video earlier this week, Bruno Guimaraes is admired by Manchester United, yes, but so too is Tonali, and other players are on the list, including Elliot Anderson.”
Tonali could join United too
As Romano mentioned, Guimaraes isn’t the only Newcastle player who Man United are keeping tabs on, as they are also interested in Sandro Tonali, who seems more unsettled at St James’ Park than Guimaraes is.
Tonali reportedly wants Champions League football, and is understood to be on the radar of Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Man City heading into the summer. However, he could cost upwards of £100m, which could make a deal very difficult to do.
Guimaraes on the other hand, is expected to cost closer to £70m, which would be a more reasonable deal that United could more likely manage.
