Next eight days massive for Leeds United making £16m summer transfer profit: View

The writing feels like it’s on the wall for Leeds United forward Joel Piroe at Elland Road. On an international level, he could enjoy the best moment of his career in the coming week.

The international break has a number of intriguing sub-plots for United this week to keep an eye on. Of course, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s England return, against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay is the biggest headline.

Outside of Europe, though, Joel Piroe’s first appearance for Suriname looms. It could be the biggest pair of fixtures in the South American nation’s history.

Joel Piroe faces World Cup opportunity after Suriname decision – Crucial qualifiers await this international break

Piroe made his decision earlier in the season to represent Suriname’s national team at a senior level. Having featured in the Netherlands’ youth system, Piroe used his dual nationality to make a decision that could help springboard his country to the World Cup.

Teaming up with former Leeds striker Jay-Roy Grot, Piroe and Suriname face Bolivia on Thursday night in a World Cup playoff semi-final.

Should Suriname come out victorious, Iraq awaits them in the playoff final in the early hours of Wednesday April 1st to decide who will go to the World Cup in June.

Alongside winning the Championship title and golden boot, going to the World Cup could be the best moment of Piroe’s career.

Leeds United could gain significant financial boost through Joel Piroe’s international form

The £16million forward signed from Swansea City has helped massively in getting Leeds out of the Championship. However, I think it was always inevitable that he wasn’t going to cut it in the top flight for us.

The shift in style in the Premier League means there’s no way Leeds can carry a passenger out of possession that hasn’t ever been physically dominant in his position.

Should the club look to cash in during the summer, a fee of £4million upwards would be considered profit beyond his book value. Signed on a four-year deal, Piroe enters the final year of his contract this summer. Therefore, his book value will be a quarter of his initial fee. That fee was £16million with all add-ons included (it’s unconfirmed if they’re all triggered).

Who is willing to pay a huge sum after a season of zero league goals to date is tough to say. But, everyone knows of his finishing quality and his book value represents a window for Leeds to profit.

That said, as is the case any time a major international tournament comes around, players can use that as a springboard to generate interest. Piroe should be no different.

Of course, even if Suriname make it to the World Cup, they’re heading into one of the strongest groups in the competition. Awaiting them would be France, Senegal, and Norway.

Even a goal or two for Piroe could tempt European clubs into taking the bait on the Leeds forward.
