Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford faces a battle to secure his permanent move to Barcelona.
In 2026, Marcus Rashford’s role at Barcelona has become more definitive. He is purely a back-up at the Spanish club, and did not even come off the bench in their 7-2 win over Newcastle.
Despite Barcelona expressing interest in bringing Rashford back, they are baulking at the previously agreed price of £26 million. It has even been claimed they are looking to loan him for the 2026/27 season instead.
Worryingly for Rashford, Barcelona are considering alternatives.

Barcelona eye Benfica forward
Spanish newspaper Marca report that Barcelona are considering a move to sign Andreas Schjelderup from Benfica.
He would be an alternative to Rashford, who would still command big wages even if he took a reduction from his expensive Manchester United contract.
Marca report: “The situation is now uncertain. His performance has dipped in recent weeks, and signing him is too expensive for a player who will be a substitute.”

Rashford has not scored for Barcelona since January 31. His La Liga goal tally for the season is stuck on four.
Barcelona are also considering moves for Abde Ezzalzouli from Real Betis and Real Mallorca’s Jan Virgili. They retain rights to both players after they came through the academy.
It is claimed Barcelona would have to rule out a move for Rashford before committing to another player.

Rashford fighting for future
The challenge for Marcus Rashford is getting on the pitch at the moment. He started only one of the five games Barcelona played in March, and has not played 90 minutes since December.
Rashford has been named in the England squad, but his spot is not guaranteed. He is one of 35 players looking to win over Thomas Tuchel for the World Cup.
The best case scenario for him is he secures his move to Barcelona and a spot in the England squad for USA 2026.
But there is an alternative outcome where Rashford gets neither, and the final few weeks of the season could determine how it all works out.
