Sunderland’s social media response to their derby win has caught attention, with a series of pointed posts aimed at Newcastle United and Sam Fender
Sunderland have quickly capitalised on their latest Tyne-Wear derby victory by taking a swipe at Newcastle United on social media, adding further edge to the post-match fallout.
Newcastle had made the ideal start at St James’s Park when Anthony Gordon struck early, but Sunderland responded impressively after the break to turn the game around and secure all three points. The result not only sealed a memorable comeback, but also stretched Newcastle’s winless Premier League run against their rivals to 11 matches.
The reaction on Tyneside has been one of frustration, with renewed scrutiny on Eddie Howe following consecutive derby defeats. The shift in mood is notable given the positivity surrounding the club not long ago, when Howe was widely praised after guiding Newcastle to Carabao Cup success. Now, the conversation has turned, with supporters divided over the direction of the team. Sunderland, for their part, have not shied away from the moment.
Shortly after full-time, the club updated their cover photo across social media platforms, choosing an image of the travelling supporters celebrating inside St James’s Park. The picture, which includes a banner referencing “Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army”, was a clear nod to their opponents and has since generated plenty of reaction online.
They also shared a clip of Brian Brobbey’s winning goal, paired with Sam Fender’s track Rein Me In - with Olivia Dean featuring - a pointed choice given the artist’s well-known Newcastle allegiance. The post quickly gained traction across platforms, further underlining Sunderland’s willingness to lean into the occasion.
Attention for Newcastle United now turns to how they respond. Speaking after the defeat, Howe insisted he remains fully committed despite the disappointment and growing external pressure. “I am committed, fully committed,” he said. “I'm disappointed in myself and my delivery today over the last week.
“The Barcelona game was very tough. Today is even tougher. Yeah, I mean, I always, as I said after the Brentford game, absorb myself and don't look to deflect it to my players, I protect my players to my last breath. That is how I look at it. It is going to be a tough, painful few days for me.”
