West Ham have the chance to bolster their ranks when the summer transfer window opens

West Ham are showing ‘interest’ in Bologna striker Santiago Castro, according to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. The report adds that Nottingham Forest are also keen on the player this summer. His contract in Italy expires in June 2030.

The Hammers are currently embroiled in a relegation battle in the Premier League. They are inside the drop zone with Burnley and Wolves. The London outfit were beaten 2-0 away by Aston Villa last time out before the international break.

West Ham keen on Bologna striker Santiago Castro

West Ham need to secure their top flight status before they can start thinking about their recruitment ahead of the next transfer window. If they stay up, their chances of signing Castro would be greatly improved. He would give them more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch.

Castro, 21, rose up through the academy at Velez Sarsfield. He was a regular for them at various different youth levels before he broke into their first-team as a teenager. The Buenos Aires-born man scored nine goals in 65 games before South America for Europe.

The Argentina youth international was snapped up by Bologna back in 2023. He has since proved to be a useful option for the Serie A club but his future there is up in the air amid attention from the likes of the Hammers and Forest. The prospect has found the net on 22 occasions in 94 outings, 11 of which have come in this campaign.

Speaking after West Ham’s loss to Aston Villa, Nuno Espirito Santo said: “We lost against a good team. That’s a fact, but we were not good enough today. Our performance was not good and in the first half we didn’t play good. We arrived late in the duels. We didn’t press as well as we should have done. We were never comfortable in the game.

“We improved slightly in the second half, but not enough to change the dynamic of the game. We’ve been performing well and you can see the fans, they were there and today we disappointed them and that is what hurts us the most. We have to realise that we have to do much better.”
