Liverpool May Consider 46 Year Old As 'Contender' To Replace Slot - Jurgen Klopp Has Described Him As A "Top Coach"

Former Brighton and Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi could emerge as a “contender” for the Liverpool job if Arne Slot is sacked, according to reports.

Writing for The Telegraph, respected journalist Matt Law said that the 46-year-old might be among the candidates for the hot seat at Anfield.

However, De Zerbi also has admirers at Manchester United, while he has signalled that he would be interested in taking the Tottenham job at the end of the season.

Law has, though, emphasised that the Italian would only join Spurs if they remain in the Premier League, which is not guaranteed at this stage.

Klopp has already given his seal of approval

Speaking about De Zerbi back in 2024, former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp expressed his admiration for the then Brighton manager:

“It’s a different way – I couldn’t coach that. It goes against my personality. It’s very demanding for the players. They have clear positioning and pass in the right moments. He’s a top coach.

“It’s super interesting to see – I like watching them [Brighton]. It makes it tricky. It’s possession-based but even more structured than maybe Manchester City or whoever that have a bit more freedom. On their day, they can beat anyone in this league.”

Will Liverpool sack Slot?

The Dutchman is back under pressure after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to De Zerbi’s former team, Brighton, at the weekend.

At the bookies, Slot is still the favourite to be in charge at the start of next season, but the price has lengthened from odds-on to 11/10.

Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann are deemed the two likeliest alternatives, with the odds of De Zerbi being handed the reins being priced anywhere between 16/1 and 33/1. He is very much a rank outsider for the position at this moment in time.
