JUST A FEW weeks ago it was reported to us at Claret and Hugh – as well as other media sources -largely emanating from the telegraph.co.uk – that veteran striker Callum Wilson was signing a year’s extension to his pay per game Hammers contract as recognition of his goals, fitness and contribution since joining on a free in the summer.
How the Telegraph broke the story
However in something of a shock to what many assumed was a ‘done deal’ it seems there’s no been no such contract, no such signing.
Awaiting any kind of confirmation from the earlier report, Claret and Hugh reached out to our source close to, but outside the West Ham hierarchy, to be told in no uncertain terms that news of Wilson signing a new contract was: ‘total cr*p: They can’t offer anyone a contract [..as] they don’t know what league they’ll be in”
Which makes total sense. The Hammers, if relegated would have to have a total reboot with the wholesale exodus that would likely follow: Little point in tying one solitary player down ahead of the end of the season.

However, the role Teddy Sheringham played in 2004-5 would be one to which Wilson might be perfectly suited: More to the point, until Premier League status is either confirmed or surrendered, Callum Wilson is just one of many whose future hangs in the balance whilst the shadow of relegation hangs over the club.
