West Ham
West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez is in contention to return to the pitch with Fenerbahçe in April.
In August 2025, West Ham let the midfielder join the Turkish club on a loan deal with an option to buy.
He has been struggling with multiple injuries since moving to Turkey and is currently on the sidelines.
The West Ham owned player has missed over 100 days and 20 matches already for the Yellow Canaries. This has limited his game time to 1,125 minutes from 15 matches, and that includes 10 league starts.
His Süper Lig statistics per game are as follows:
Tackles: 2.5
Clearances: 0.9
Ball recovery: 5.0
Interceptions: 1.5
Duels won: 5.5
The Mexico international hasn’t featured since February 2nd due to an ankle injury. On February 17th, he successfully underwent surgery. At that time, Mexico sporting director Duilio Davino refused to discuss his return date despite having an idea about it.
West Ham player in Netherlands
The Istanbul club host Beşiktaş in the derby on April 5th, after the international break. Fanatik have a report on the current injured Fenerbahçe players and when they could be back on the pitch.
This includes Edson Álvarez, who has been out of action for more than a month. The 28-year-old, ‘is injured, is continuing his treatment in the Netherlands’.
The report gives no explanation why the former Ajax man is working on his recovery there. However, he’s played in the Netherlands for Ajax, so will have connections in the country.
Despite his efforts, he is unlikely to recover in time for the clash against Beşiktaş.
Meanwhile, Davino has given a fresh interview to ESPN in Mexico to discuss return of the Hammers man and Tijuana’s Gilberto Mora from injuries.
“Gil will be with the Mexican national team. The information we have is that, like Edson… he’ll rejoin his team at the beginning of April,” he said.
What next for Mexico and West Ham
Fenerbahçe have secured a purchase option with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side. There’s no clarity whether it’ll be activated and if not, Edson Álvarez will return to West Ham United after this season.
Right now, that’s the likeliest scenario. In that case, the Hammers have to decide whether to keep or sell him in the summer. Ajax interest in taking him back continues to pop up and that could turn into a concrete solution.
Álvarez has a contract lasting until 2028 with the London club and Transfermarkt value him at €18m.
Like many players in his situation, the midfielder won’t want to return until he’s fully fit. The upcoming World Cup has an impact in that regard.
