Reports claim Newcastle United’s CEO addressed staff in an emergency meeting after the derby defeat, insisting the club’s “conviction remains undiminished.”
Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson reportedly sent an emergency video message to staff following the club’s Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland, underlining the scale of the result on Tyneside.
According to The Times, Hopkinson contacted more than 500 members of staff in the immediate aftermath of the loss at St James’s Park, attempting to steady the mood after Brian Brobbey’s dramatic late winner sealed Sunderland’s comeback victory.
The Black Cats overturned an early deficit after Anthony Gordon’s opener, with Chemsdine Talbi levelling before Brobbey struck in stoppage time to spark wild celebrations in the away end. The final whistle was met with audible frustration from the home support, reflecting the significance of the result on Tyneside.
From a Sunderland point of view, the reaction has only reinforced the magnitude of the win. Not only did it secure local bragging rights, but it also saw the Black Cats move above their rivals in the Premier League table - a notable achievement for a newly promoted side. The report claims Hopkinson moved quickly to address staff internally, stressing unity and resilience despite the setback.
He said: “It hurts us because we care. It’s adversity, and adversity does not define us - it reveals us. There’s a great quote from Vince Lombardi (the legendary former American football coach); it’s not whether or not you get knocked down, it’s how you get up. So we will have a tough day, and then we’ll get up.
He continued: “We’re building something very real here. That journey is not a straight line. Yesterday feels heavy, and it is, but that’s ok - we won’t carry it for very long. Our enthusiasm and our conviction will remain undiminished.”
The tone of that message appeared to reflect a club attempting to regroup after a difficult result, with scrutiny also increasing around head coach Eddie Howe following back-to-back derby defeats. For Sunderland, however, the focus remains on the performance and the progress under Régis Le Bris. The derby victory was another statement in what has been a strong return to the Premier League, with safety secured with seven league games remaining.
