“A rope around your neck” – Burnley midfielder opens up on England move and relegation battle

Burnley midfielder Florentino Luís has offered a detailed insight into life in the Premier League, with the Clarets man opening up on intensity, adaptation and his early months in English football.

The 26-year-old arrived from Benfica with strong pedigree, including two Primeira Liga titles and a reputation as one of Portugal’s most reliable defensive midfielders. However, the move to Turf Moor has brought a very different challenge.

Speaking to a Portuguese podcast, Florentino made it clear that playing in England had long been an ambition, and he now finds himself living that reality.

“I used to watch Premier League matches every weekend when I was younger, whenever I had time. Today, being able to live this dream and be part of the elite has been a unique experience. It has been challenging every day since I arrived,” he said.

That dream quickly came with a reality check.

“I remember the first weeks of training, it was a shock. I knew it would be more intense, but when you actually experience it, you realise it’s much more intense. You have to be at your limit all the time.”

Burnley environment and Premier League demands

Florentino Luís then shifted focus to Burnley itself, highlighting what stood out most after his arrival.

“What surprised me the most was the work ethic inside the club. Everyone breathes the same thing, everyone knows the objective is to be better prepared for the weekend.”

He also pointed to the human side of the club, something he did not necessarily expect before moving to England.

“They care a lot about the personal side. I thought English people were more closed, but they are very friendly and open. That extra care shows the professionalism and why this league has been the best in the world for many years.”

On the pitch, the adjustment has been clear. The midfielder admits his game has evolved to match the demands of English football, even though he called out the fans before for their criticism.

“It changed a bit. I had to become more objective. Maybe before I was more conservative on the ball, but here the style is more direct.”

That shift reflects a wider tactical reality across the division.

“All teams like to press and understand they can go man-to-man. That’s why you see big teams dropping points against smaller sides.”

‘Every weekend feels like Champions League’

Florentino Luís was particularly emphatic when describing the level of competition for Burnley in the Premier League.

“For me, every weekend is like a Champions League game. That’s the best comparison. You know you can’t relax at any moment.”

He also highlighted the unpredictability that defines English football.

“You see games where teams are winning 2-0 until the 80th minute, and then everything changes. There are a lot of comebacks. You can never relax.”

His personal highlight so far reflects both that intensity and the scale of the stage.

“My most memorable moment was my assist at Anfield when we drew. It was a very demanding game, and to have that impact in a stadium like that gave me a feeling of achievement.”

Relegation fight and mindset

Burnley’s situation has added another layer to his Premier League experience, with survival the clear objective: “Our goal is clear – to stay in the Premier League.”

Florentino Luís believes that pressure can bring unexpected benefits.

“When you are fighting not to go down, it’s like having a rope around your neck. In those situations, you find strength where you didn’t think you had it.”

That mindset has shaped his season, both individually and collectively.

“It develops you as a player and as a person. When you are comfortable, sometimes you stagnate. Here, you always feel there is something you can improve.”

What happens next

His ability to adjust quickly has been important. According to FBref data, he continues to rank strongly for tackles and interceptions, maintaining the defensive consistency that defined his Benfica spell.

Still, the next step is clear. He wants to add more attacking output, while Burnley need points to secure survival. “I want to improve with assists and goals. I know it’s difficult, but why not?”

For Burnley, that evolution could be decisive.
