Régis Le Bris handed major Sunderland suspension boost after Newcastle United win with FA rule explained
Sunderland have been handed a timely suspension boost following their win over Newcastle United, with several key players avoiding two-match bans.
The current disciplinary picture shows Trai Hume on eight yellow cards, Reinildo Mandava and Noah Sadiki on seven, and Omar Alderete on six. Enzo Le Fée and Granit Xhaka have five, while Brian Brobbey, Habib Diarra and Nordi Mukiele sit on four.
Under FA rules, any player who reaches 10 yellow cards up to and including their side’s 32nd Premier League fixture receives a two-match suspension. Sunderland have now played 31 league games. Those players are now set to pass the 32-game threshold and are no longer at risk of a two-game ban for yellow card accumulation this season.
It is a significant boost for Régis Le Bris, particularly given how close Hume was to the limit, with Sunderland also set to welcome back several first-team players from injury after the upcoming two-week international break following the game against Newcastle United. The Black Cats will be hoping for positive news on Dan Ballard and Robin Roefs, while Reinildo Mandava, Nordi Mukiele and Enzo Le Fee returned to the bench against Newcastle United.
The five-yellow-card threshold earlier in the campaign - which results in a one-match ban after 19 games - has already passed, meaning that it is no longer a factor. The only remaining disciplinary risk comes from red cards. Unlike yellow card accumulation, red card suspensions apply across all domestic competitions and would still lead to bans if issued.
