Sunderland have trolled Alan Shearer on social media after completing the Premier League double over rivals Newcastle United. Regis Le Bris’ side came out as 2-1 winners at St James’ Park on Sunday, a result which puts them above Newcastle in the table.
A second-half goal from Chemsdine Talbi and a 90th-minute winner from Brian Brobbey helped Sunderland to turn the game around after Anthony Gordon’s 10th-minute opener, prompting wild celebrations in the away end.
The reverse fixture earlier in the season also saw Sunderland come out on top. Nick Woltemade’s own goal gave the Black Cats all three points over Eddie Howe’s team.
The two results will be hard to take for Magpies fans, including pundit and club legend Shearer. But Sunderland have wasted no time in rubbing salt into the wounds.
Speaking on a previous episode of the Rest is Football podcast earlier in the season, Shearer said: “We want Sunderland back in the Premier League because it’s a guaranteed six points for us.”
He then added with a laugh: “That might come back and bite me in the future.”
Sunderland have now taken the opportunity to make sure those comments do come back and bite him.
They posted a clip on their official TikTok page, with the traditional circus music in the background as the winning goals from the Black Cats’ double over their rivals are shown. The video ends with Shearer looking furious in the minutes after the weekend’s result.
Shearer didn’t hold back on his thoughts on Newcastle’s performance when taking to social media himself following the loss.
He wrote on his X account: “A pathetic, weak, lazy, limp second half from Newcastle again.”
He then expanded on his thoughts on the Rest is Football podcast.
"I was getting so annoyed and so angry. Sunderland were the better team and [they] punished us. Brian Brobbey was probably the best player for Sunderland. £17m he cost from Ajax, you compare to Newcastle's recruitment in the summer and what they've paid on forwards. There lies the problem,” he said.
“That's been a huge problem for Newcastle, inconsistency. Sunderland wanted it more than Newcastle and that was pretty damning.
"Particularly after the way Newcastle played in the first game at the Stadium of Light, Eddie got it all wrong that game and he couldn't lift his players in the second half and that is really worrying and disappointing.”
