Bruno Fernandes’ contract at Man United is set to expire in June 2027, making his future uncertain.

If United decide not to sign Fernandes to a contract extension, they will need to consider selling him in the summer in order to ensure they get a fee back for him, rather than letting him leave for free in the summer of 2027.

Predictably, Man United are looking at potential replacements for Fernandes heading into the summer, and their shortlist of Fernandes replacements is growing and growing.

Man United ‘willing’ to spend £86m on Lopez

One name that has emerged for Man United in recent weeks is Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, who would be a real coup. The Spaniard signed a new contract at Barcelona last year, meaning he could be a tough deal to complete, as his current contract runs until 2031 at the Nou Camp.

According to Spanish outlet Football Espana, Manchester United are willing to spend at least £86m to sign Lopez in the summer, as a potential Fernandes replacement. However, it is understood that neither Lopez or Barcelona is keen on a move for the 22-year-old right now, so the Red Devils would need to send a very attractive offer to land him.

This season, Lopez has made 39 appearances for Hansi Flick’s side, scoring 12 goals, and providing 16 assists. He has been one of the best players in La Liga this season, and would be a fantastic addition for Man United.

Replacing Fernandes will be no easy task, as this season, the Portuguese midfielder has scored eight goals, and provided 16 assists for the Red Devils, breaking David Beckham’s assist record.

Man United should consider Ndiaye instead

Seeing as Lopez is expected to cost at least £86m, but likely more based on Barcelona’s stance on selling him, Man United should look elsewhere for their replacement for Fernandes.

Ndiaye is expected to cost around £80m, which is slightly cheaper than Lopez, but he is much less of a financial risk due to his proven experience. Ndiaye has made 25 Premier League appearances for Everton this season, scoring six goals, and providing three assists.
