Albion will eye summer transfer window in quest for more firepower

The Seagulls have been short of firepower this term after losing key players in attack and are currently a disappointing ninth in the table.

Their tally of 20 goals in 17 games is in line with their Expected Goals figure.

But they looked short of threat in their 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

Eight of their 20 goals have come in 4-1 home wins over West Ham and bottom side Leicester, who they visit on Sunday.

They lost last season’s top scorer Nikita Parris in the summer and then saw Michelle Agyemang suffer a season-ending knee injury while with England.

Carla Camacho, signed last summer, is a specialist No.9 who appears to have potential and opened her WSL account at Chelsea last week.

But she was taken off at half-time in that game because she was not carrying out duties off the ball to the coach’s satisfaction and she did not come off the bench against Liverpool.

Top scorer Kiko Seike, with six in the league, has been away at the Asian Cup.

Seike is a winger who has been used centrally at times and her xG figure of four suggests she has not been on the end of routine goal-poaching chances.

Asked after the Liverpool game about strengthening in attack this summer, head coach Dario Vidosic told The Argus: “We are looking at it already for a little while.

“We didn't get what we required in this summer and then it was a little bit unfortunate with Miche (Agyemang) as well, when she went down with the national team.

“Although young, she experienced that season with us the year before, was learning, had the pre-season as well so she was one that, although maybe wouldn't have gone and set the league on fire early, I think she would have caused a lot of headaches and then each week would have got better and better through the experience, through the learnings.

“Unfortunately, we lost her very early and since then we've been sort of just trying to make the best of what we've got.

“It is difficult when we played with no wingers and no No.9 and that is all we've got at the minute, basically attacking midfielders.

“Kiko is our only real out-and-out winger and Carla, I suppose, is our only No.9 and is a very young striker, hasn't played a lot of football.

“We have gone the season without a recognised goalscorer, without someone as well on the other wing.

“We've had to come up with different ideas, different solutions.

“Today we've done everything we could, put midfielders, then we ended up with Rachel (McLauchlan) there, then we ended up with Maelys (Mpome) there at the end.

“Once Kiko is back, at least the right wing or one of the wings will be a little bit easier to fill.”

Seike is now back with the squad and is likely to return to the line-up on Sunday.
