Crysencio Summerville’s future is likely to come into question again soon enough, with the West Ham United winger mentioned as a potential solution for Liverpool in the post-Mo Salah era by Anfield icon Steven Gerrard.
One of the worst-kept secrets in football was finally confirmed on Tuesday; the ‘Egyptian King’ will be vacating his throne after nine years, two Premier League titles, and over 250 goals.
Now, West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has often been mentioned as a Salah successor.

Roma made an offer in January…
Steven Gerrard indicates that Crysencio Summerville may be a more suitable acquisition for his old employers, however, with Bowen only nine months away from his 30th birthday.
Steven Gerrard talks up Crysencio Summerville idea for Liverpool as West Ham United star shines
Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard spoke in glowing terms about Summerville while suggesting that the ship may have sailed for Liverpool regarding Bowen.
”I like Summerville,” said The Reds’ 2005 Champions League-winning skipper. “He is brilliant in one-v-ones, he looks hungry. In a team that has struggled he has been a shining light and got better as the season has gone on.
”I really like Bowen and think he is a top player, but I am not sure he is Salah’s level to replace him.”

It is testament to how far Summerville has come since the turn of the year that Gerrard mentions the former Leeds ace alongside such luminaries as Leipzig wonderkid Yan Diomande, PSG speedster Bradley Barcola, and Bayern Munich assist king Michael Olise.
”To replace Mo is going to be hard and cost a lot. You need somebody very special,” adds Gerrard. ”I think if you’re Liverpool you have to go for ready, tried and tested, and for me that would be somebody of the calibre of Olise. If you are talking Olise on the right for Liverpool that is box office.
“Barcola can play on the left and right. There is a young lad at Leipzig, Diomande, he is only 19, he leaves people for dead.
”I would be very surprised if they are not in the market for these types of players because you have to buy someone who is box office or else you are not replacing him. They have to be top end, top three or four wingers in the world, to replace Mo Salah, because that is what he has been.”

Summerville cannot rule out a London Stadium exit
While Summerville played down concerns over his calf injury when speaking to Algemeen Dagblad a fortnight ago, West Ham’s £30 million talisman left the door ajar to a future away from the Premier League relegation battlers.
“Things happen the way they happen,” he said when initially explaining his decision to leave Feyenoord for Leeds half a decade ago. “I have taken a different path.
“Where will that take me? First, staying in the league with West Ham. Then, we’ll see.”
Antonio Conte’s Napoli are the latest to be linked with Summerville, scorer of seven goals in 2026 after none in an injury-hit 2025. Fabrizio Romano predicts that a busy summer awaits West Ham and their deadly Dutchman.
“West Ham rejected two approaches from the Premier League and Serie A for Crysencio Summerville in January,” Romano said last month, those approaches allegedly from Roma and bitter rivals Tottenham.
“[Summerville was] seen as untouchable for this season. Player happy to stay and help West Ham but the summer will be different. One to watch in June with several clubs keen.”
Summerville has three years remaining on his contract. Should the Hammers avoid the drop, the expectation is that they will demand a considerable profit on the £30 million fee they paid Leeds when Summerville was anything but a proven Premier League performer.
