Leeds United arguably have the most ‘favourable’ remaining fixtures of the four clubs in this relegation scrap. Daniel Farke’s comments on our hopes for survival may be proven right.
This international break probably comes at an ideal time for Leeds and Daniel Farke. He’s got seven games left after the break and plenty to be optimistic about.
Of course, he’s got to find a way to improve Leeds’ stalling attacking numbers. But, the defensive record of late is incredibly encouraging, with back-to-back clean sheets.
Daniel Farke: Leeds United don’t deserve to stay up if we can’t secure points needed
Prior to Brentford, Farke laid his neck on the line with his view of how the relegation scrap is shaping up. We were on 32 points with a three-point gap to the bottom three before kick-off, and Farke mapped out what was needed for survival.
He stated that it would take six-to-eight more points for Leeds to ensure that we’re a Premier League team for another year. Should we fail to achieve that, Farke believes we don’t deserve to be in the division.
“From the first day we were confident,” Farke told the YEP. “After many brilliant performances and good results, perhaps even more now.
“Everyone knows the different animal the Premier League can be but we take confidence. Still work to do, if we don’t win six to eight points then we probably don’t deserve to stay in this league but I’m pretty sure we will prove we do.”
What followed was a positive weekend for Leeds in truth. We all left Elland Road on Saturday thinking a goalless draw wasn’t ideal, but defeats for West Ham and Spurs, alongside Nottingham Forest’s win, means we’re now four clear.
If Farke stands by his projected target, we now need five-to-seven points for safety.
Sky Sports’ Leeds United fixture reveal proves Daniel Farke right – If we can’t get 5-7 points, we deserve relegation
Looking to the rest of the season, the question is going to be asked of Farke and his men. Can you get Leeds above 38 points to ‘make sure’ of survival?
Few will expect Leeds to add to the points tally away at Old Trafford in our next league game, but beyond that? We surely have ample opportunity to tick over with regular points.
Sky Sports have laid out the final seven games for each team from 18th up to 15th-placed Leeds. It’s good viewing for United on paper:
Fixtures colour coded: 20th-15th are green, 14th-7th are yellow, 5th-1st are red
Leeds have four games against sides in the bottom five of the table, importantly playing four of the five sides below us in the final seven. Included in that are two home meetings against Wolves and Burnley, the bottom two and two worst away sides in the division.
Should Leeds win both, we’d be finishing on 39 points regardless of other results going our way. We also travel to Tottenham, the current worst home side in the division too.
Farke’s right. If Leeds can’t stay up with these remaining fixtures, we don’t deserve to be in the Premier League.
