West Ham star Mateus Fernandes has opened up on why he sees Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as a role model amid rumours of a potential move to Old Trafford. United have already been linked with a host of potential new signings as the summer transfer window moves ever closer.
Midfield is a position that has seen several players linked with a move to United, particularly after it was confirmed that Casemiro would be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Fernandes joined West Ham last summer from Southampton, but has experience of competing in Portugal at Sporting Lisbon, where United also signed their club captain back in 2020. There have been reports that United are interested in the Hammers star, who is said to be valued at around £42million.
It remains to be seen whether or not United will look to target the West Ham midfielder when the transfer window opens, and it seems that the 21-year-old has already delivered high praise to a member of the Reds squad.
Fernandes has linked up with the Portugal squad for the first time in his career this month, with the former Southampton midfielder opening up on the nerves he felt on his first day with the squad.
“I was a little nervous on the first day because I was going to train with players I saw on television and who were role models,” Mateus told Abola, when asked about the emotions he felt about his first call-up with the Portugal national team.
Fernandes also went on to explain why United captain Fernandes is a role model to him, and has been so since his time in Portugal with Sporting.

“The biggest one [role model] right now is Bruno [Fernandes] because of the player he already is,” the West Ham star added.
“Back when I was at Sporting, I looked up to him and tried to learn from him. He plays in the same league as me, he has a lot of experience with the national team, and, in the Premier League, I try to watch him a lot. Without a doubt, he stands out.”
United will have to wait until the summer transfer window opens to strengthen their squad, and it’s unclear if Fernandes would be a target or if West Ham would be determined to keep the midfielder in their squad.
The Hammers are facing the threat of relegation from the Premier League, which could have an impact on their ability and determination to keep the 21-year-old at the London Stadium.
