Premier League form table: Sunderland's 10-game run compared after Newcastle United win

How does Sunderland’s form compare to their Premier League rivals following Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby win against Newcastle United?

Sunderland’s dramatic late win in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby clash with Newcastle United has given the Black Cats some serious momentum as they prepare for the final run-in to the end of an already memorable Premier League season.

After recovering from an early goal from Magpies forward Anthony Gordon, Regis Le Bris’ side racked up a famous win at St James Park thanks to an equaliser from Chemsdine Talbi and a last-gasp winner from striker Brian Brobbey. The win also ensured Sunderland completed a league double over Eddie Howe’s side and stretched their unbeaten run in league fixtures against Newcastle to an eleventh game and that represents the longest unbeaten run by either club in the long history of one of English football’s longest running rivalries.

The win also helped Sunderland recover from their narrow home defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion and put them in the race for a European place. Once several Black Cats stars return from representing their countries over the international break, Le Bris and his players will focus on producing a strong end to the season and their attempts to take the club into Europe for only the second time in their history and that process will begin with a home clash against struggling Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, April 12. But how Sunderland’s form over the last 10 games compare to Spurs and their other rivals across the Premier League?

Speaking after the game, the Black Cats boss said: “Big achievement, winning two derbies in the same year, it means a lot for us, it means a lot for the group and the quality we showed. This game was tough, as expected, because we know that Newcastle has this ability to go strong, especially during the first half, to generate momentum.

“The crowd as well, they were intense - we conceded the goal, our mistake, which can happen. The team reacted well, it was important to stay 1-0, to have the ability to realign the team during the half-time. It was okay, and we showed what we wanted to show during the second half. This win means a lot for us, as a team, as a coach, as a staff, for our fans as well. We have two games against Newcastle, and they play at a big level, they played in the Champions League last week, so it means a lot. It's another stage, and we want to get better.”
